FOR HOMESCHOOLERS AND ANYONE WHO WANTS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR CANINE COMPANIONS
DOGS Unit Study
Consider using a 3-ring notebook with dividers to make a “Dog Scrapbook” for this unit study.
Label dividers: “Dog Breeds”, “My Dog Art”, “Dog Stories”, “Dogs Around the World”, “The Science of Dogs”, and “How I Helped a Dog”.
Use the unit study ideas below to begin filling in your Scrapbook. But after you’ve finished here, keep your notebook for collecting photos, art, stickers, and any information you learn about dogs.
Happy Learning!
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Life Lessons/Community Service
•Volunteer at a local animal shelter or adoption booth.
Contact your local animal shelter, rescue organization, or PetSmart store to see how you can help!
•Collect items for the animal shelter
Animal shelters and rescue organizations are usually in need of newspapers, old towels, dog and puppy food, pet medicines, and crates. Contact your local organizations to find out what they need, then consider organizing an “Old Towel Drive” or a “Newspaper Drive”, etc. among your friends, relatives, and neighbors to collect items, then take them to the shelter to make lots of homeless animals very happy.
•Take care of a dog
If you don’t already have a dog, considering “fostering” a dog for a week! Many animal shelters and rescue organizations need families to care for puppies and dogs until someone is ready to adopt them. Contact your local animal shelter or PetSmart store to ask about fostering.
Or see:
http://adoptions.petsmart.com/ to find when adoption booths will be available in your area. Many PetSmart stores have adoption booths every Saturday. Often times, to foster a dog, you arrive at the adoption booth at the end of the day (check for time) and choose from the puppies or dogs that did not get adopted. Take your new friend home for a week, then bring him back to PetSmart the next Saturday morning for another chance at adoption.
Make a list of the things dogs need to be well taken care of.
For ideas see:
http://www.loveyourdog.com/whatdogsneed.html
Keep this list in your “How I helped a dog” section of your notebook.
If you foster or adopt a puppy or dog, be sure to share your experience with us on americanbeachdog.com. We love to hear happy stories!
