“Come on, we’re going for a surprise!” my Mom yelled from the other room. My older sister and I looked at each other puzzled.

We never go for surprises. Mom and Dad didn’t give in to our pleas for them to tell us where we were going. After what seemed like the longest trip ever, Dad turned off the road into a driveway that lead to a sign in front of the house that read “The Doggie Motel.” My heart jumped a beat. As we stood in the waiting room looking around at the pictures on the walls of cute dogs and puppies. Mom went up to the counter and told the woman that we were here to pick up a new puppy, soon a woman walked in holding the cutest little dog I’d ever seen. She was a Wired Haired Fox Terrier and it was love at first sight. We held her tight on the trip home, all thinking and thinking of a proper name for her. It suddenly came to me, we had a neighbor’s dog that I would visit all the time named Augie. Augie’s middle name was Boo. I suggested it and everyone agreed that it would work just fine for this sweet little girl. I was so proud that Boo was the name of our new addition to the family and I had gotten to name her. I’ve had many dogs since, but Boo holds the special title of “my first real best friend.”
